Ruffi Dog

I made a puppy dog sandwich in an attempt to replicate a favorite stuffed animal at our house, Ruffi.

Feels like Summer

It really felt like summer this weekend, and today.  The boys are asking when the outdoor pools open.  9 weeks wasn't the answer they were hoping for!  So, a beachy lunch instead.  The sandwich is leftover chicken from last night shredded and mixed with Taziki sauce for a greek feel.  The little container is ranch to dip the broccolis in, then stawberries and vanilla yogurt.

Harry Potter 3, and a Panda

I'm tired today.  Really tired.  I did not enjoy making lunch today.  I think it shows.

Harry Potter day 3 for Gabriel, an attempt at the Hogwarts crest, 2 brooms, and some quaffle honeydew melon balls.  I was completely stumped on blue food and just dyed the Ravenclaw section of the crest.  Could have been cool if I slept much last night!

For Clark a panda sandwich and eucalyptus leaves (grapes).  He hated it.  LOL  I think I've been setting expectations too high to maintain?

Harry Potter - sort of....Day 2

Ok, so he looks more "South Park" than "Harry Potter", but hey, I worked until 1am and then had to have the kids at the orthodontist at 8am.  So, this is as good as it gets today.

Harry Potter Lunch

Today's lunch is Harry Potter.  I made a pretzel broom with fruit roll up for the bristles.  The owl is rice onigiri with teriyaki vegetable filling, a mango golden snitch with provolone wings and a plum cauldron filled with yogurt.

Super Hero Week: Batman

Today is my last packed lunch until March 26 because of Spring Break.  Today's theme is Batman.  I got some nesting oval cookie cutters and I used 3 graduated sizes for the sandwich, outline of the cheese, and a template for the curve of the bat symbol.  The rest of the bat I hand drew on wax paper and then cut it out with a toothpick.  The white bats are apples (dipped in diluted lime juice or they brown and the kids won't eat them).  The dark little bats are fruit leather.

Super Hero Week: Green Lantern

I went with a spinach tortilla today to get the green color.  I also carved lantern symbols into the apple slices and dipped them in lime juice to keep them from turning brown.  I wish I had green apples, but there ARE Red Lanterns too you know.  Actually, chances are, you don't know.  But after 15 years of marriage, I do.

Superhero Week: Superman

Ok, so Superman purists (like my sons) will immediately notice that I have the colors backwards here.  I died the bread with brushed on food coloring and then I traced the logo onto wax paper.  I cut it out using a toothpick and put the pieces that are supposed to be yellow on the sandwich and it just looked wrong.  So, the colors are backward and it does look much better this way, even if both boys immediately said, "Mom!  the S is RED!"  Oh, and if you are going to brush (diluted) food coloring onto bread, so it several hours ahead and give the bread time to dry.

Super Hero Week: The Incredibles

I need more cookie cutters I think.  I had to cut this oval by hand, which makes it look much rougher.  Dark pumpernickel bread with cheddar and provolone cheese.

Mo Willems Week

Last week it was Dr. Suess week at my son's preschool.  They had a Dr. Suess themed hot lunch and he was very upset because I make him eat a healthy cold lunch every day.  So I decided this week was Mo Willems week.  We love Mo!  The Elephant and Piggie books were the first books he really has LOVED to read.  So far I have made Pigeon, Piggie, and Knuffle Bunny.  The white in all cases is sliced swiss cheese.  The dark brown is pumpernickel bread rolled flat with a rolling pin.   I have used a combination of a cheap set of easter egg cookie cutters from Target and cake decorating tips to cut circles and ovals.  I used butter as glue.  Enjoy!

And I tried a Naked Mole Rat.  I don't like it.  I think he looks pretty ugly and unappetizing.  Oh well, they won't all work now will they?  My kids also finally told me that the bed of veggie straws absorbed moisture from the sandwhich and got soggy.  Oops.  I'm thinking superheros next week....
